Brief History of Motorcycle Development


Since Daimler invented and manufactured the world's first motorcycle powered by gasoline engine in 1885, the development of motorcycle has gone through more than 100 years of vicissitudes.


The original motorcycle, which exists in Munich Museum of Science and Technology, is the first motorcycle in the world patented by German Daimler on August 29, 1885.


Limited to more than 100 years ago, the gasoline engine is still in a low-grade and naive condition, and the vehicle manufacturing is still at the stage of horse-drawn carriage technology. The original motorcycle is quite different from the modern motorcycle in appearance, structure and performance. Looking from the wood grain, it is made by carpenters. The wheels are also made of wood. The outer layer of the wheels is covered with a layer of iron. There are several square wooden frames in the middle and lower parts of the frame, on which the engine is placed. Each side of the frame has a small supporting wheel. Its function is to prevent dumping at rest. So the car actually landed on four wheels. It use single cylinder fan cooled engine, output power through belt and gear two-stage deceleration drive, drive the rear wheel forward. The seat is saddled and covered with leather. Its engine cylinder has a working volume of 264 mL and a maximum power of 0.37 kW (700 r/min), which is only 1/5 of the modern simple motorcycle. It's 12 km an hour, not much faster than walking. Because there was no spring and other cushioning devices, the car was called a bone-shaking car.Although the original motorcycle is so crude, the motorcycle is constantly changing and improving, and only then has hundreds of millions of modern motorcycle descendants in more than 100 years.


In 1903, Harry's No. 1 market was the earliest commercial motorcycle in the United States. The cylinder of the motorcycle engine has a working volume of 409 mL and a power of 2.94 kW.
