What To Consider When Buying A Motorcycle Tool Kit(2)

Metric vs. Standard. There are two basic varieties of machine tools; standard (also known as 'SAE', short for 'Society of Automotive Engineers') and metric. Standard tools are measured in fractions of an inch, while metric tools are measured in millimetres. Unsurprisingly, most motorbikes built in the USA are compatible with SAE tools, while most motorbikes built in Japan, Europe or elsewhere outside the USA are usually made in metric sizes. Some bolts can be adjusted using both metric and SAE sleeves, although the fit is not exact and there is a risk of stripping the bolt. Before you buy, you need to find out which style your bike uses.

As well as knowing whether your bike uses SAE or metric tools, it's also wise to research the exact tools required for basic repair tasks on your specific make and model. For example, my 2007 GSX-R600 needed a torque spanner to perform an oil change. Because of this, I know to include one of these tools in my kit, or just know that I need one for a specific job.

Customised or pre-assembled. Motorbike tool kits come in two basic varieties: tool boxes; and pre-fabricated tool kits. The former is simply a container for tools to hold a few spanners and the like, while the latter consists of a pre-selected bundle of tools sold in a carry bag or case.

Branding. While most spanners and tools may look very similar to an outsider, anyone who has spent a fair amount of time spinning spanners is probably very aware of the huge difference in quality between Snap-On's tools and those from Harbor Freight. Buying a tool kit from a more reputable brand does come at a significant financial cost, but over time the investment does pay off, as the higher end tools on the market do last a lifetime. If you are unfamiliar with this product area, it is well worth your time to read up on some of the more popular brands to get a better idea of where they stand in the industry.

Other tips. No matter what type of bike you ride, its age, make, model or what kind of tools it's compatible with, there are some general tips that can benefit every rider. Like the actual kit itself, these items greatly improve your ability to remedy most basic maintenance tasks and roadside repairs, and should be carried with your main kit if possible.

This includes products like J.B. Weld, zip ties and duct tape. Most experienced riders also highly recommend using a comprehensive manual from Kramer or Haynes as it clearly communicates how to perform any basic roadside repair job you can imagine. Finally, even if you consider yourself to be a generally dexterous person, we still urge you to familiarise yourself with your tools in the comfort and safety of your driveway or garage.
