Motorcycle Camping Mistakes - and How to Avoid Them

Today, getting close to nature becomes the best leisure choice for people, and motorcycle travel is loved by most people. But before we travel, we need to understand the following 10 mistakes.

1. What's on Your List?

Perhaps the biggest mistake you might make is failing to plan ahead. When you consider traveling, don't hesitate to make a list of things you think of. Organize what needs to be done before you leave. As you browse the list, you may realize that something can be used for a dual purpose, which can eliminate the need to take other things.

2. Don’t Leave without submitting your flight plan.

Submitting a flight plan is a must for most pilots, and it is also not a bad idea for campers. Whether you are going with friends, partners or alone, make sure that someone returns home and knows your plan. Especially for single-person travel, if there is a serious mistake, let someone know where you plan to travel and when you should return can really save lives.

3. Paper Maps are no Longer Suitable for Travel.

It is wrong to ignore good paper maps. Good maps, especially some topographic maps of the areas you plan to go, can not only prevent you from getting lost, but also help locate natural spots that are worth seeing, such as points of interest, waterfalls, etc. GPS systems are great, but they can fail or be damaged, so sometimes low-tech countermeasures are convenient.

4. Battery Exhaustion is a Kind of Frustration.

Don't forget to charge every battery-powered device you plan to use. A fully charged backup battery is a good idea and carefully check the battery in the motorcycle. If it is a rechargeable battery, please make sure that the electrolyte reaches the correct level. If you are using a battery that has been used for many years, please consider installing a new battery before the trip.

5. The Provisions Proviso.

If your camping adventure does not include fast food in the restaurants, but bonfire cooking, be sure to pack foods that are easy to prepare. The right cookware and cutlery is the key, and a little seasoning is needed to make the dishes just right – even on the road. Prepackaged camping foods are easy to buy and pack.

6. Hope for the Best, Plan for the Worst.

Even the most cautious rider will be injured on the road. It is a real mistake to enter a rugged area without a first aid kit, or not to know some basic knowledge of first aid.

7. Keep it Wet.

Staying hydrated is vital, especially in hot weather, so you need to carry the appropriate equipment. If the source of drinking water is a question, you must plan to pack enough water. But if there is no surface water and any cooking, it is also essential to carry enough food (just add water type pre-packaged food).

8. Missing Gear (not as missing a shift).

Unlike backpacking trips, there is a piece of gear that has gear demands of its own—your motorcycle. Due consideration must also be given to critical maintenance and motorcycle tools required, such as tire puncture repair kits and inflators, spare spark plugs, main link kits (if applicable), etc., as well as all tools such as locking pliers, some heavy duty straps belt, electrical tape, survival tape, etc.

9. Multiple Tools can Come in Handy.

Multiple tools come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from tiny pocket-sized jobs to hefty items that come with their own ballistic nylon belt case. For camping, the larger ones, some of which include functional saw blades, can really win their hold. Good stainless steel models can withstand years of hard use and bad weather, but tend to cost more.

10. Off-site.

Leaving the highway and entering the remote area for overnight means finding a good campsite. If a downpour moves overnight, entering a region that is too low will quickly be revealed as a mistake. Setting up a camp on a swamp can cause water problems even if it doesn't rain. Setting up a tent in an area prone to rock fall or flooding can be a serious mistake.
