The Necessity of Wheel Balance Detection


Wheels and tires are high-speed rotating components. When the car is running, if the wheels are unbalanced, it will sway and jump. Especially when the vehicle speed is higher than 60km/h, this sway and beating will be significantly increased. For vehicles driving on the highway, if the wheels of motorcycle are unbalanced, on the one hand, the ride smoothness, the ride comfort and operational stability of the car will be seriously reduced, the fuel consumption will be increased, the wear of the tire will be aggravated, and the economy of the vehicle will be directly affected.


On the other hand, it will damage other parts of the vehicle and, in severe cases, endangers driving safety. Wheel imbalance of motorcycle can also cause damage to the chassis assembly components.


The wheel itself is equipped with a valve and is also assembled with the rotating parts of the drive train such as the tire and the drive shaft, so the wheel balance of motorcycle should be checked. Therefore, in order to control and improve the balance of the motorcycle wheels and ensure the smoothness, safety and economy of the vehicle, it is necessary to check the balance of the wheels. Experimental studies have found that when the wheel position is not correct or the wheel is seriously unbalanced, the wear rate is about 10 times that of normal use. Therefore, wheel balance of motorcycle has become one of the main inspection items for the vehicle inspection.



Cause of Wheel Imbalance


(1)Tires, rims, and retaining rings are inconsistent in their center of gravity due to geometric misalignment or uneven sealing.

(2)The mounting center is difficult to overlap due to wheel and rim positioning errors.

(3)Disassembly and assembly during the repair process destroyed the overall focus.

(4)Displacement of the center of gravity caused by deformation caused by wheel collision. Longitudinal uneven wear caused by longitudinal and lateral slippage caused by the brake lock during high-speed driving of the wheel.

(5)Improper positioning of the front wheels causes the tires to be eclipsed, causing wheel imbalance.



Static Balance and Dynamic Balance of Wheels


The wheels and tires installed on the new car have been tested for balance. As the vehicle travels and the tire is maintained or repaired, if the tire is inspected for uneven or irregular wear and the wheel alignment is out of alignment, wheel balance of motorcycle maintenance is a must. When balancing the wheels, the weights are distributed along the rims to offset the weighted parts of the wheels and tires, allowing them to roll in balance without vibration.


There are two kinds of wheel imbalance: static imbalance and dynamic imbalance.

Static balance is the mass distribution around the wheel of motorcycle. When the static unbalanced wheel rotates, it causes a jump, also called an angular jump. Static imbalance of the wheel may cause uneven wear of the tire, the main reason is that the force generated by the imbalance is more uniform. In fact, static balance is the balance of the wheel when it is stationary. This should be the case whether the wheel of motorcycle is mounted vertically on the spindle or balancer shaft or horizontally on a bubble balancer.


Since the mass distribution of the motorcycle wheel is asymmetrical with respect to the longitudinal center plane of the wheel, it may also cause dynamic imbalance. Therefore, the wheel should mainly be tested for dynamic balance.
