HOW TO DO A WHEELIE ON A MOTORCYCLE?

When it comes to performing stunts on your bike, you need to be prepared to put in hours of practice and possible pain. To be a motorcyclist is to be adventurous by definition. Many people want to learn how to pop a wheelie on a motorcycle.

1.The Three Types of Wheelies

In the world of stunt riders, wheelies are a right of passage. There are numerous tips and techniques for performing the perfect wheelie, but in most stunt circles there is a running joke that three types of wheelies exist.

The first type of wheelies is the unintentional wheelie, which refers to times where you accidentally pop up on your bike. These can occur by a crazy mix of circumstances that result in you hitting the throttle in just the right way as you run your front tire into an obstacle in the road. While often discussed in jest, these accidents are very real and can be dangerous if you are not prepared.

The second type of wheelies is the intentional wheelie, it is what you want to do. Everything goes according to plan, and you can return your front tire safely to earth without incident. These wheelies come in two forms: the power wheelie and the clutch wheelie.

The third type of wheelies is the unfortunate wheelie.  Unfortunately, as much as you practice, accidents are always a possibility. Even the most experience stunt rider will have times where an intentional wheelie goes bad. For instance, they rev the throttle too hard, or they lose their balance. Anything is possible, and that is the risk you take when performing stunts.

2.The Power Wheelie

The first thing you need to learn when discovering how to wheelie a motorcycle is the power wheelie. This version of the pop-a-wheelie is the most basic and will help build your confidence for the clutch wheelie, which can be more difficult to master.

To perform the power wheelie, you want to sit/lean back on your bike, switch into first gear and take off. First, you should let the clutch out. Then, you should open the throttle when your moving. If you do it right, you should lift you hand off the ground. Continue the process until you can control your throttle and ride the wheelie longer.

3.The Clutch Wheelie

A clutch up wheelie is a different beast from the power wheelie, and will probably take longer to master. However, you will be able to ride this type of wheelie longer and farther. This wheelie can be broken into six fundamental steps. Unlike the power front wheels, you don't need to lean back for the clutch wheel.

The main speed at which people learn this technique is figuring out how to control the clutch and throttle. To begin with, you need to build to a steady RPM. For this type of wheelie, you should be somewhere between 1500 and 2000 RPMs, which breaks down to about 10 to 20 MPH.

You will need to open the throttle quickly and accelerate, which compresses your rear suspension. Compressing your suspension is vital for a clutch wheelie, as you are not building speed, only enough power to go vertical, which happens around 5000 RPMs. You must quickly disengage the clutch to gain lift. Therefore, immediately following your acceleration, disengage the clutch, allowing the engine to rev to between 5000 and 6000 RPMs. You may need to practice this until it becomes smooth transition. When your power is around 80%, you should release the clutch. However, you can't release too fast or your RPMs will drop too low to allow or maintain a wheelie. Unfortunately, there is no magic trick to this part of the learning curve, only practice. When you get it right, though, your bike will pop right up.

Learning how to ride a wheelie on a motorcycle is exhilarating, but it is also risky. Therefore, make sure that you prepare by getting the best motorcycle tires for the job, and that you know and can control your bike with both wheels on the ground before going vertical.
